A multi-layered ontology for comparing relationship semantics in conceptual models of databases
نویسندگان
چکیده
Relationships are an integral part of the design of a database. Comparing and integrating relationships from heterogeneous databases requires that the relationships be mapped to each other or to a common classification. Identifying similarities and resolving differences in relationships across large data sources is a resource-intensive task that could benefit greatly from semi-automated approaches. A prerequisite to developing such approaches is a clear understanding of the semantics of relationships used in database design. This research presents a layered ontology for classifying the semantics of relationships. It consists of a core layer that captures the fundamental types of relationships between entities. A middle layer provides the internal context, obtained from entities surrounding the relationship, to interpret the fundamental types. The outer layer allows further interpretation using the external context, that is, the domain in which a relationship is being used. An initial assessment on relationships from a variety of application domains demonstrates that the ontology can be adequate and useful for comparing relationships across databases.

An Ontology for Classifying the Semantics of Relationships in Database Design
Relationships are an integral part of conceptual database design because they represent associations between entities from the real world. With the proliferation of both traditional, corporate, and now, web-based, databases representing similar entities, comparison of relationships across these databases is increasingly important. The ability to compare and resolve similarities in relationships...

متن کاملAutomatic Hashtag Recommendation in Social Networking and Microblogging Platforms Using a Knowledge-Intensive Content-based Approach
In social networking/microblogging environments, #tag is often used for categorizing messages and marking their key points. Also, since some social networks such as twitter apply restrictions on the number of characters in messages, #tags can serve as a useful tool for helping users express their messages. In this paper, a new knowledge-intensive content-based #tag recommendation system is intr...
متن کامل1 A Mediated Architecture for Content - Based
We are developing an Architecture for Distributed INformation system Access (ADINA), which is a mediated architecture to support a simplified database interface for applications that search heterogeneous multi-media scientific data archives. ADINA provides an insulation layer to applications that query archive metadatabases with different conceptual and logical structures. To search underlying ...
متن کاملContext Representation in Domain Ontologies and Its Use for Semantic Integration of Data
The goal of this paper is to identify various aspects of context-awareness needed to facilitate semantics integration of data, and to discuss how this knowledge may be represented within ontologies. We first present a taxonomy of ontologies and we show how various kinds of ontologies may cooperate. Then, we compare ontologies and conceptual models. We claim that their main difference is the con...
